Old Men & TikTok

That wide grin caught my attention.

My wife and I were going through our Saturday ritual… breakfast at a local restaurant, making a Walmart run, etc. As we were settling in to our booth to order, I noticed two older gentlemen giggling a bit and talking quietly at their table. First, one would poke around on his smartphone and display a video to the other fellow and then his breakfast buddy would do the same. I just happened to catch a glimpse of the familiar TikTok logo at the end of a video that was being displayed.

MY GOODNESS… I never dreamed that the older generation would give in to this newfangled modern social media stuff. But there it was, right in front of me, two strangers (to me) having a hoot, sharing silly videos with one another. At least, I hope they were sharing “silly” videos 🙂 Anyway, indeed, times are changing… aren’t they?

This little observation happened in a small Southern town in West Tennessee, far from the slickly promoted coffee bars that some people frequent. So, this caused me to take notice and consider how our seniors, the older generation, are adapting to technology and some of the perks it provides. Yep, they are streaming content on Netflix, SMS and RCS messaging, Facebooking, and even diving into the youthful waters of TikTok.

Old friends, be careful out there in the digital realm. Don’t be afraid, but don’t be foolish either. Especially when it comes to anything to do with money, exercise an abundance of caution. Most of you older folks – at least the decent ones – generally have good hearts and want to think the best of everone. However, and trust me on this, there are deviants amongst us far and near, that make it their occupation / their mission to find new ways of scamming people. Unfortunately, they usually target older people who are not well versed in modern security habits, 2FA, encrypted communication, and so forth.

Hey, trust your gut for the most part, when it comes to these random emails and texts that ask for help or make weird promises, it very likely is a scam. Think before you click that button or make that reply. Take some precautions with your online habits and please, for heaven’s sake, use strong passwords 🙂

Yes, I know that last comment causes a lot of you to bristle and grumble but you must find a way to keep up with some strong passwords for your online accounts. That is WAY better to figure out than trying to find a way to get your money back after some hacker cleans out your bank account… right?

Be careful y’all!
